“This offer is unparalleled on the German-language streaming market”

Alexander von Woikowsky, Managing Director 7TV

The 7TV joint venture between ProSiebenSat.1 and Discovery aims to establish a leading streaming platform for Germany with ten million users within its first two years. What this means is that viewers can look forward to a comprehensive entertainment package with live streaming, catch-up content including high-caliber local offerings and the best from Hollywood as well as top-notch sports broadcasts – all on a single platform. Launched in fall 2017, the 7TV joint venture has subsequently attracted additional partner stations, expanding its portfolio. Alexander von Woikowsky has been Chief Content Officer since the beginning of 2018 and, as Managing Director of 7TV, is additionally responsible for partnerships and distribution. His previous position was in the ProSiebenSat.1 Distribution department. He talks to us about the joint venture’s challenges and ambitions.
What gave rise to the idea of creating a streaming platform as part of a joint venture with Discovery and other partners?

The idea of a consortium came about during a joint workshop held back when I was still at ProSiebenSat.1. Initially, we deliberated on how we could evolve our business models and expand our streaming offerings. It didn’t take long for us to realize that global broadcaster Discovery and strong local competitor ProSiebenSat.1 complement each other rather well. Born of these early realizations, 7TV was formed as a 50/50 joint venture. Our goal here is to cultivate a new multi-station, multi-company streaming portal that makes its name as a local champion. That’s why we are deliberately keeping the platform open and have expressly invited other media companies such as RTL as well as public broadcasters to join us.

Why is this platform so important?

Digitalization has changed viewing habits. Above all, younger audiences increasingly prefer non-linear offerings and want to be able to watch content on any device, any time, any place. Exclusive content that is only available to viewers from us is also playing an ever more important role. With our platform, we can offer just that, while counterbalancing the U.S. players.

"We want to create a counterbalance to the the U.S. players."
What challenges does the collaboration pose?

The biggest challenge is undoubtedly bringing together the various Discovery and ProSiebenSat.1 teams and structures. We want to retain an independent startup spirit and reach quick, effective decisions. Now that the maxdome colleagues have moved in with us, we also want to convey our culture to them. At the same time, Discovery and ProSiebenSat.1 benefit from synergies across a range of very different areas – from technology, through content purchasing, to communications. It’s a huge advantage for us to be able to harness two giant corporations’ expertise and infrastructure.

"Our goal is to cultivate a new multi-station, multi-company streaming portal that makes its name as a local champion."
What are the next steps planned?

In order to win over viewers, the platform needs attractive content and cutting-edge technology that makes using it easy and convenient. We are currently putting concerted efforts into both. From the word go, users have been able to access programming from ProSieben, SAT.1, kabel eins, DMAX, sixx, ProSieben MAXX, SAT.1 Gold, kabel eins Doku and TLC. On top of that, there’s the Eurosport zone with highlight clips. We again expanded our portfolio to offer content from SPORT1, WELT and N24 Doku in early 2018. In 2019, maxdome and Eurosport Player will also be integrated into the platform. This offer is unparalleled on the German-language streaming market. Also, the joint venture will be getting a new name. As you can see, we have a lot lined up!
