ProSiebenSat.1 TV Deutschland co-produces Pompeii, a four-hour miniseries based on the bestseller by Robert Harris

Unterföhring, 4 April 2011. Since the publication of Robert Harris' historical novel Pompeii in 2003, millions of copies have been sold and it has been translated into 30 languages. Taking place against the dramatic backdrop of the destruction of this wealthy Roman city in the year 79, Pompeii is now being filmed as a four-hour television event. Pompeii is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Tandem Communications, Peace Out Productions, and Scott Free Television for ProSiebenSat.1 TV in Germany and SKY in the UK among others. The book adaptation will be handled by Academy Award winner Robert Towne, whose screenplays for smash hits such as Chinatown (1974) and Mission: Impossible (1996) have long established him as one of Hollywood's leading screenwriters. Andreas Bartl, Chairman of ProSiebenSat.1 TV Deutschland: "With Pompeii our network is continuing its successful strategy for international co-productions. This adaptation is about to become another milestone in a row of TV-events that we realized with our partners at Tandem over the course of the last couple of years, from Ring of the Nibelungs to The Pillars of the Earth." "The destruction of Pompeii has fascinated me for a long time. I devoured Robert Harris' novel as soon as it was published. The fact that we are now adapting it for television is like a dream come true," said an enthusiastic Thomas von Hennet, VP of International Co-Production at ProSiebenSat.1 TV Deutschland.
