UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup: ProSiebenSat.1 Group obtains largest live football rights package in German Free TV

- ProSiebenSat.1 acquires exclusive Free TV rights for Champions League and UEFA Cup from 2009 to 2012
- Agreement includes broadcasting rights on platforms such as Online and Mobile TV for the first time
- Attractive On-demand-rights for video-on-demand

Munich, June 19, 2008. ProSiebenSat.1 Group maintains its position as a provider of first-class international football events and has obtained the largest live football rights package in German Free TV. The agreement with UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, includes 17 top matches of the UEFA Champion League as well as 29 matches of the UEFA Cup of all three seasons from 2009/2010 to 2011/2012. The deal also contains extensive highlight rights as well as the UEFA Super Cup, in which the winners of both competitions compete against one another each year. For the first time, the Group also obtained the right to exploit the matches live and delayed via Internet and mobile platforms. Additionally, the deal includes selected exploitation rights for the Groups video-on-demand portal maxdome. Sat.1 will be broadcasting both competitions in German Free TV.

The agreement allows Sat.1, on each match day, to select one of the Wednesday UEFA Champions League matches for a live broadcast. If only one German team remains in the competition and is scheduled to play on a Tuesday, the channel can use the so-called follow-your-team-option and change the day of broadcast. In all, Sat.1 will be presenting a total of 17 matches of the European premium league, from the last qualification round (Q3) through to the final, which for the first time will be played on a Saturday. The decision which matches to broadcast will be based on attractive constellations as well as German participation.

On Thursdays, Sat.1 will be broadcasting two matches on each UEFA Cup match day until the final. The channel is free to select both matches individually and will broadcast them in a UEFA Cup football Evening spectacle. Due to the centralized marketing of rights by UEFA, all matches can be broadcast by one channel for the first time. In the UEFA Super Cup in August, the winners of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup will compete against one another at the start of every European club football season in Monte Carlo.

By acquiring additional broadcasting rights for Online and Mobile TV, ProSiebenSat.1 Group is now able to offer live broadcasts and wrap-ups of the matches on its online platforms and via Mobile TV. In addition to that, live streams of UEFA Cup matches as well as extracts of Champions League matches could be broadcast via the Groups video-on-demand portal maxdome in a weekly show.

The UEFA Champions League includes 32 top clubs from Europe. Two positions are guaranteed for the leading clubs of the German Bundesliga. Another German club, the third placeholder in the Bundesliga, can additionally qualify via the last qualification round (Q3) comprising one home and one away match. Clubs that will be the next highest ranked clubs in each domestic league after those participating in the Champions League qualify for UEFA Cup. In Germany, this applies to the ranks four to five. Additional teams can also qualify via the fair-play regulations and by winning the DFB-Pokal. The UEFA Cup is the biggest competition in European club football.
